Windows 11's Copilot: Elevating PC Experience with Advanced AI Capabilities

Microsoft has recently announced a significant update to its Windows 11 PC operating system, accompanied by the introduction of Copilot, an AI assistant. Functioning similarly to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Copilot is a generative AI that is capable of producing text with human-like quality and independently executing various tasks with minimal direction. By leveraging extensive language models trained by OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, Copilot facilitates tasks like composing emails, providing answers to queries, and automating actions within the Windows environment. It enhances its knowledge by incorporating information from various websites.

additionally, in an effort to enhance user experience, Microsoft plans to upgrade its Bing search engine with a chatbot. In the near future, Microsoft 365 Copilot, an AI add-on tailored for corporate users of productivity applications, will also be made available. The Windows Copilot will introduce several PC-specific features, such as app launching, dark mode switching, Bluetooth activation, and assistance with capturing screenshots. Furthermore, while using the Edge browser, Copilot can offer users summaries of web content. Unlike Apple's Siri assistant, Copilot delivers more detailed responses on Mac computers.

as per StatCounter data, Windows 11 presently holds approximately 24% of the desktop PC market, with Windows 10 dominating nearly 72% of the market until October 2025. Following the end of Windows 10 support, it is expected that Windows 11, introduced in 2021, will garner further popularity. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has acknowledged accelerated adoption of Windows 11 by prominent companies like BP, Eurowings, Kantar, and RBC.

windows serves as a vital component in Microsoft's operations, significantly contributing to the company's total revenue. It aims to maintain Windows' relevance as the foundation for its Microsoft 365 productivity suite and as a catalyst for growth in the Azure public cloud.

one of the prominent features of this year's Windows 11 release is Copilot. Some users have already accessed Copilot through a "continuous innovation" release issued by Microsoft in September. This newly adopted approach allows the company to offer customers new features multiple times within a year, rather than following an annual update cycle.

users can initiate text-based conversations with the virtual assistant by simply clicking on the Copilot icon in the taskbar or using the convenient Windows+C keyboard shortcut. Through a panel located on the right side of their display, Copilot provides significantly enhanced capabilities compared to its predecessor, Cortana, which was introduced in 2015 with Windows 10 and gradually phased out.

apart from Copilot, the Windows 11 2023 Update, also known as 23H2, includes several notable features:

1. Virtual video editor: The built-in Clipchamp video-editing app now incorporates an auto-compose feature, simplifying the process of creating a final video. Users can answer a few questions, and Clipchamp will compile scenes from their footage accordingly.

2. Polyglot screen reading: Last year, Microsoft introduced AI-driven natural-sounding voices for its Narrator accessibility feature, capable of reading on-screen text. The latest update expands support to additional languages, including English in the United Kingdom and India, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

3. Lower energy bills: Some PCs are equipped with presence sensors that can automatically turn off the display when the user is away and reactivate it upon their return. A new energy-saving feature called "adaptive dimming" adjusts screen brightness based on the user's gaze behavior. This feature can be enabled or disabled during device setup or through the Settings app.

furthermore, for users with a cloud-based version of Windows, the option to directly log into the cloud instance as their primary experience on their PC is now available. Additionally, with the updated Snipping Tool app included in Windows 11, it is now easier to extract text directly from screenshots, enabling quick redaction of sensitive information, such as emails or phone numbers.

Enhanced backup capabilities are being introduced by Microsoft. Users will now be able to back up previously installed apps on their PC and restore them in the future, along with pinned app preferences.

discover the power of words in the near future with the Paint app. Microsoft is currently testing AI capabilities for the app, allowing users to input a few words and select a style, resulting in the creation of an image based on the description. This functionality is similar to tools offered by Adobe and other companies, as well as Microsoft's image creator in the Bing search engine.

take customization of your taskbar to the next level with Windows 11. The new design places the Start button and a lineup of app icons at the center of the bottom of the screen. Now, you can view app icons with accompanying labels, just like in Windows 10. Even inactive apps can be displayed with labels, and you have the option to hide the time and date.

notepad now comes with automatic memory to make your work seamless. Your progress will be automatically saved, allowing you to pick up where you left off when you close and reopen the application.

searching for pictures has become effortless with the enhanced Photos app in Windows 11. You can now input keywords and objects in the search box to find relevant images stored in OneDrive.

get tailored file recommendations for work on your Windows 11 work computer. The File Explorer and Start menu will now provide file suggestions based on your usage patterns, making your workflow more efficient.

experience instant gaming with Microsoft's "instant games" feature currently being tested. Try out casual games from the company's Store app without the need to download and install them first. This feature is similar to what was previously implemented by Google on Android devices.

discover developer-centric features with the Dev Home app. Software developers can now track activity on Microsoft-owned GitHub, monitor PC activity, and set up a new type of PC storage volume called a Dev Drive, all from one centralized platform.

access a dedicated space for system components in Windows 11. By clicking on the "All apps" button in the Start menu, you will now see a "system" label for apps that Microsoft considers system components, such as File Explorer. Managing these apps is now easier with a dedicated page at Settings > System > System components, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple settings.

please note that while some of these features may not be immediately available, they will be gradually introduced with future updates. For example, the Windows Copilot feature is currently in preview and accessible only in North America, as well as select regions in Asia and South America. Microsoft plans to expand the availability of this feature to other regions in the future.

to access the new features, simply navigate to the Settings app on your Windows 11 PC. Locate the Windows Update section and click the "Check for updates" button to upgrade to version 23H2. Detailed information about the update for education and commercial customers can be found in a blog post.

rest assured, Microsoft will make the update available for your Windows 11 PC. However, if Microsoft identifies any potential issues, the installation option may be temporarily disabled until the problems are resolved.
