EFFECTIVENESS OF GENERATIVE AI

To ascertain the impact of AI on productivity, efficiency, and performance, researchers from Harvard Business School executed an extensive randomized controlled field experiment involving hundreds of management consultants at BCD. These consultants are highly skilled professionals engaged in complex tasks integral to their roles, earning substantial compensation.


The results of the study unequivocally demonstrate that AI leads to significant gains in productivity, efficiency, and performance. Consultants assisted by AI were able to complete their work much more quickly and deliver outputs of significantly higher quality.


The researchers collaborated with BCG to conduct two pre-registered randomized experiments involving their consultants. Around 800 BCG consultants, representing approximately 7% of the company's individual contributor consultants globally, participated in the study. Most participants held advanced degrees, such as MBAs from top programs or PhDs in technical fields, and earned annual compensations exceeding $250,000.


The study encompassed two distinct experiments, each involving a different type of realistic task frequently encountered by the consultants. Participants were randomly assigned to control and treatment groups, with some granted access to AI assistance powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 system, while others completed the tasks without AI support.


The rigorous experimental methodology employed enables causal conclusions to be drawn regarding the impact of AI. By randomly assigning consultants to different groups and experimentally varying AI access, the researchers were able to isolate the effects of AI.


AI'S CAPACITY TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY

In tasks within the current capabilities of AI, the results of the study demonstrate tremendous gains in productivity. With the assistance of AI, consultants were able to complete their work 25% faster on average.


Each participant initially undertook an assessment task to establish their baseline performance. In the subsequent experiment, consultants were tasked with brainstorming and developing product prototypes and market launch plans for shoes targeting niche segments.


The 18 sub-tasks involved elements of creativity, analysis, writing, and persuasion. Consultants supported by AI outperformed the control group by completing a greater number of sub-tasks, achieving a remarkable 12.2% increase. On average, AI-assisted participants reached the final task question 22.5% faster. This clearly highlights that within the scope of realistic activities compatible with AI's capabilities, it provides substantial boosts to productivity and efficiency for highly skilled professionals. Unlike previous automation tools that focused solely on routine tasks, AI enhances and augments complex job roles.


Surging QUALITY


Remarkably, researchers have discovered that AI not only boosts efficiency but also significantly enhances the quality of outputs. Based on randomized human evaluations, AI has shown to increase quality by over 40% for tasks within its capabilities.


Consultants have successfully utilized AI to generate ideas, analyze data, and create written content. When subject responses were evaluated by human graders, the AI groups consistently achieved higher quality scores.


Even after accounting for individual differences using statistical models, the advantages of AI remained highly significant. This indisputably demonstrates AI's ability to effectively augment human capabilities and improve performance.


Similar results have been observed in other studies focusing on specific professional tasks. For instance, researchers at MIT assigned occupation-specific writing tasks to 444 college-educated professionals, with half of them given access to ChatGPT. The findings demonstrated that ChatGPT considerably enhanced average productivity, reducing the time taken by 0.8 standard deviations and elevating output quality by 0.4 standard deviations. Moreover, ChatGPT helped reduce inequality among workers, benefiting those with lower abilities and narrowing the productivity gap.

In a second experiment involving business analysis, consultants using AI provided incorrect answers nearly 20 percentage points less frequently. To trigger errors in AI, the data used for analysis was intentionally crafted.


While some consultants excessively relied on flawed AI outputs, others effectively combined their expertise with AI, dividing responsibilities and scrutinizing results.
